Ned and Heather had loved each other for several million years, and would have given anything to be able to even hold hands. Unfortunately, Ned and Heather were boulders, so even though they were just a few feet from each other they had no chance of ever touching. They envied rocks, who at least got to move every once in a while when someone threw or kicked them. And they especially envied pebbles, who were constantly traveling as they hitched a ride on river currents and rainwater.
They did however, engage in long conversations that often lasted thousands of years, in which they would take turns rhapsodizing about the perfect, shining depths of each other’s soul. Then they would watch the world turn, and stare lovingly at each other as the shadows shifted across their faces. Their love was so great, in fact, that it sent out waves of good feelings that made all of the forest animals hold their mates just a bit closer at bedtime.
Then a jewelry designer, out for an inspirational walk, wandered close to Ned and Heather, and instantly the waves of mutual devotion that they sent out pulled her close to them. She sat on Heather—who, with Ned, were situated on a spot overlooking a lush green valley—and immediately felt a beatific calm. She was so calm, in fact, that she didn’t even notice the person next to her, who was comfortably situated on Ned.
The man next to her, filled with the same sense of being fully in the moment, explained that he studied rocks of all kinds, and had been drawn to these seemingly nondescript boulders as if by magic. The jewelry designer, already feeling the first tremblings of a connection, said that she, too, had felt the magical pull of these children of the earth’s crust. As the man discussed his passion for geology and the woman discussed her passion for jewelry, the two were soon holding hands, watching the sun set.
When they planned their marriage, they agreed that of course he would take choice morsels from each of the boulders, and that she would use them as raw materials for their rings. When he began his work, however, he soon discovered, to his delight, the streaks of gold that were Ned and Heather’s souls. And so it was that when the jewelry designer melted the gold to forge their wedding bands, she joined them together, where they share an embrace on the ring fingers of husband and wife to this very day.
